Vedder Partners With Pro Athlete Zach Sieler in Mission to Get Kids Outdoors

For many, heading outside to play sports or explore nature was a core part of childhood. But for others, these opportunities are few and far between. The Sieler Safe Haven Foundation, founded by professional football player Zach Sieler and his wife, Hannah, is working to bridge that gap by creating outdoor experiences for kids who may not otherwise have the chance. 

This fall, we’re excited to launch two limited-edition Kydex patterns—TD Camo and Ranger Gator— and a themed SSHF Black Bear Patch designed in support of this cause. But we’re taking it a step beyond fun patterns and merch. For the entire month of September, Vedder Holsters is donating a portion of all sales sitewide to the Sieler Safe Haven Foundation. 

As part of the sporting goods industry, we’re excited to help raise funds and awareness for a cause dedicated to impacting the lives of children through outdoor adventure and education. 

The Sieler Safe Haven Foundation: Transforming Young Lives in the Wilderness

Zach and Hannah Sieler were both drawn to the outdoors from a young age. Not only did this early time in nature blossom into lifelong interests, but they say it helped develop their character in a way only the elements can.

“The outdoors has been a huge part of both of our lives. It shaped who my wife and I are in ways that go way beyond hunting or fishing,” Zach Sieler said. “It’s also where we both feel closest to God and to what He created on this earth. It taught us patience, discipline, and gave us some of our best memories with family.” 

The idea to start the Sieler Safe Haven Foundation came in 2019 after a boy using a wheelchair joined their hunting camp. Seeing the challenges he faced in trying to access the outdoors inspired them to create an organization that would make these experiences more accessible for those who may not otherwise have the means or ability to do so. 

Their dream became a reality in 2022 when the foundation was officially registered as a non-profit. From there, they’ve built an organization that hosts a variety of programs designed to teach kids stewardship, personal development, and practical skills through outdoor activities and adventures.

“Our whole point is to hopefully create a passion in a child for the outdoors, or at the very least give them a better understanding of what it’s actually like out there,” Sieler said. “There’s nothing like getting somewhere unaltered by man, where it’s just you and God’s creation the way it’s always been. … For a young person, that kind of experience gives them a perspective and a sense of wonder that a screen or a city just can’t replicate.”

Some of the activities the Sieler Safe Haven Foundation has offered over the years include hunting and fishing excursions; sports camps and field days; and hands-on conservation, agricultural, and wildlife management adventures. Each event is designed to give kids real-world experiences that build teamwork, character, and a respect for the earth. 

The foundation also participates in a number of philanthropic endeavors throughout the year. Some of their work includes providing school supplies to kids in need and their annual “United Flight” event, in which they partner with United Airlines and the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to fly 30 patients to a fantasy North Pole experience. The kids get to meet football players, Disney characters, and, of course, Santa Claus himself.

“The memories and reactions from those kids are priceless. Being able to create that opportunity brings us to tears every year,” Sieler said. 

Although the United Flight event is one of the year’s highlights, both Zach and Hannah are always reinspired when they have the chance to personally introduce a child to the outdoors for the first time. 

“Seeing that spark in their eye, and for us knowing how impactful that moment could be for them, that’s something you can’t really put into words. Both experiences remind us why we do this,” he said.
